DEADLINE: OCTOBER 12, 2026, MIDNIGHT
Eating Disorders Nova Scotia is a community-based organization that believes no one should have to face an eating disorder alone.
We draw on lived experience to create welcoming, pro-recovery spaces and supports that are compassionate, validating, and accessible. Our programs include peer support groups, one-on-one mentoring, clinician-led skills groups, workshops, family support, and peer-led programming at our North End Halifax house.
About The Role
Peer Mentors use their lived experience of eating disorder or disordered eating recovery to provide one-on-one recovery-oriented support to individuals in the community.
This role is grounded in compassion, non-judgement, confidentiality, and healthy boundaries. Peer Mentors work independently while receiving ongoing support and supervision from Eating Disorders Nova Scotia staff. Mentors are asked to commit to at least 12 months with the organization and be available 4 - 8 hours per month.
Peer Mentors receive an honorarium of $20/hour for time spent supporting the program. Depending on their interests and availability, mentors may also have opportunities to participate in group facilitation and other programs.
Responsibilities
Provide supportive one-on-one mentoring sessions that encourage connection, reflection, and growth through shared lived experience.
Complete required reporting and administrative tasks.
Establish and maintain appropriate boundaries and confidentiality in accordance with Eating Disorders Nova Scotia policies and training.
Qualifications
We are looking for individuals 18+ who have:
At least two years of personal experience working through recovery from an eating disorder or disordered eating.
Strong communication and active listening skills.
The ability to establish and maintain healthy boundaries.
An understanding of confidentiality and ethical peer support.
Strong self-awareness and comfort sharing personal experiences in a supportive manner.
Knowledge of and commitment to effective self-care.
Flexibility, reliability, sound judgement, compassion, and a strong sense of ethics.
Training & Ongoing Support
Successful candidates must complete Eating Disorders Nova Scotia’s 30-hour Peer Mentor Training program, which includes five weeks of live virtual training via Zoom and required on-demand learning and assignments.
Training also includes completion of required documentation, including a Criminal Record Check and Reference Check.
Following training, mentors receive ongoing support through Monthly Mentor Meet Ups, a Community of Practice, and Coordinator supervision.
We love to hear from candidates with a passion for the mission and lived experience with eating disorders recovery. Eating Disorders Nova Scotia is committed to the principles of equality and diversity in the workplace. We welcome applications from Indigenous peoples, minority communities, immigrants, persons with disabilities, and the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
